Blake makes the thirty-minute jaunt from his loft to my family’s farm to meet us for five-thirty supper as my mom calls it. I hate that we have driven separately, but there’s no way around it.

When he pulls up, my family is waiting on the porch like eager psychos. Mom and Cormac wave enthusiastically, and so does Blake. He fits right in with this odd bunch.

“Blake Harrison,” my mom calls as Blake steps from his truck.

“Mrs. O’Brien,” Blake walks straight to her, like they are long-lost friends. Okay then.

“Please, call me Bridget.”

Blake hugs her, and lifts her a little off the ground.

“Now that’s how you hug,” she laughs.

“Cormac,” Blake one arm bro-hugs my brother.

Then, he turns to me, wraps me in a hug, and plants a kiss on my lips. It’s fucking adorable how excited he is.

I can’t help but laugh at him. I’ve never been this close with someone I’m dating, not enough to bring them home with me. I don’t know what I’ve been expecting, but Blake’s enthusiasm for my family makes me feel really happy. I haven’t even known I want this, but now that we’re here, it’s obvious to me how important it is to bring them together. I’m not sure we’ll get this love from his family, so I’m happy to share.

“I hope you’re hungry. I made horse steaks.” My mom looks Blake dead in the eyes, and rubs her stomach.

His face lights up with fear.

The three of us crack up at that, and Blake realizes she is kidding and laughs along. Dad used to make that joke all the time. I’ve missed it.

“Okay, that scared me. Not going to lie,” Blake confesses.

Mom loops her arm through his, and walks him through our front door.

“I’ve made colcannon and champ, which is a fancy Irish way of saying mashed potatoes with cabbage and an egg on top.”

“Sounds delicious.” Blake looks back at me and winks.

As we eat, Blake asks Mom a million questions about horses, and then we head to the living room to catch a Wings game on TV. My mom and Cormac sit on either side of Blake on the couch.

“Can’t I sit by my boyfriend?” I protest.

“No, you get him all the time. Dad always said you need to learn to share,” Cormac argues. I give him an alarmed look, and he adds, “Eww, not in that way. Sit down, Coco.”

I sit in the recliner next to Mom, and we rock back and forth.

She whispers loudly, as if she wants him to hear, “I really like him.”

“Me too,” I copy her.

“I can’t believe you actually played on a team with Parker Miller. That’s crazy.” Cormac fans out as Miller makes a heroic save on the TV. The Devils are crushing the Wings, which usually would suck, but in this case it’s okay, because it’s Miller.

Blake laughs. “I didn’t appreciate it as much then, but it is crazy.”

“Does he ever come back to see you guys? Because, if he does, you can call me up.
